In a move welcomed by airlines and frequent business travellers alike, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has quietly approved a ten-year validity period for Electronic Travel Authorizations (eTAs) issued to European Union passport-holders. The change will take effect on 1 July 2026 and doubles the previous five-year limit. According to a Reuters brief carried by Atlas Guide, more than 4 million EU residents entered Canada in 2025; Ottawa believes the longer validity will boost repeat visits for tourism, conferences and short-term work assignments without compromising border security. Practically, nothing changes in the application process. Travellers will continue to apply online, pay the CAD $7 fee and, in 95 % of cases, receive instant approval. The eTA remains electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, so applicants should ensure their passport is valid for the full period they intend to use the authorization; an expired passport automatically invalidates the eTA, even if time remains on the authorization itself. From a policy perspective, the decision aligns Canada with other major destinations such as Australia and the United States, both of which already grant long-term electronic entry clearances to visa-exempt nationals. Industry groups including the National Airlines Council of Canada say the measure will reduce last-minute airport rejections and shorten check-in queues during the FIFA World Cup 2026, when thousands of EU fans are expected to arrive for matches in Vancouver and Toronto. Corporate mobility managers should review their traveller profiles to confirm that EU assignees and visitors apply (or re-apply) on or after 1 July to benefit from the longer validity. Companies that rotate staff frequently between European and Canadian offices can now amortise compliance costs over a decade rather than five years, easing administrative overhead. Travel risk teams, however, should remind employees that eTAs can still be revoked unilaterally if criminality or inadmissibility concerns arise; advance screening remains essential. IRCC has hinted that other visa-exempt regions could receive similar extensions in 2027 following a policy review of program integrity and airport processing times. For now, the ten-year privilege is limited to the EU’s 27 member states; citizens of the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia continue under the standard five-year rule.
