Home Affairs Hosts SME Webinar on Hiring Overseas Workers and Cyber Security
The Department of Home Affairs teamed up with Regional Development Australia Riverina on 27 October 2025 for a national webinar aimed at small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grappling with labour shortages. The hour-long session—titled “Employing Overseas Workers: Visa Options & Cyber Security”—walked employers through sponsorship pathways under the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) and Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186), recent reforms to the General Skilled Migration points test and the refreshed ‘Check Twice, Submit Once’ document-integrity campaign.

Officials also demonstrated the upgraded Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) portal, which now offers real-time alerts if a worker’s visa status changes. According to Home Affairs, usage of VEVO by regional businesses has jumped 27 % year-on-year, driven by compliance pressures in agriculture and aged care.

A guest segment from the National Office of Cyber Security warned that migrant-worker recruitment scams have spiked 38 % in 2025, often targeting hospitality operators unfamiliar with government fee structures. Presenters urged SMEs to adopt multi-factor authentication on ImmiAccount log-ins and to check ABN validity before paying third-party agents.

For employers, the practical takeaway was clear: inaccurate or incomplete nomination paperwork remains the leading cause of processing delays—averaging 48 days for the 482 visa stream. Home Affairs encouraged firms to lodge decision-ready applications and budget for the higher Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (AUD 76,515) that takes effect 1 July 2025.

Recordings and slide decks will be available on the RDA Riverina website this week. Businesses that missed the live event can still submit questions via the department’s Employer Inquiry line, ensuring regional companies remain competitive in Australia’s tight labour market.
