Exactly one year after inaugurating its 14-hour Madrid–Tokyo flight, Iberia celebrated the route’s anniversary on 27 October, pledging to raise capacity above 108 000 seats next year. The A350-operated service has already contributed an estimated €100 million to the combined GDP of Spain and Japan and created 1 900 direct and indirect jobs.
The carrier highlighted strong premium-leisure demand and a 10 % jump in Japanese bookings to Madrid, underpinned by onboard adaptations such as Japanese-style menus and green-tea service. For Spanish exporters, the route provides the only nonstop belly-cargo option to Japan, shaving two days off door-to-door transit for pharma and perishables.
From a mobility standpoint, the flight strengthens Madrid’s role as an Asia–LatAm bridge: corporate assignees from Mexico or São Paulo can now connect to Tokyo with a single Schengen entry. Global firms should update travel policies to leverage Iberia’s through-fares, which undercut rival one-stop itineraries by 15–20 %.
Iberia also confirmed talks with JAL on deeper codesharing and with RENFE to issue combined Avlo-plus-A350 tickets, signalling tighter air-rail integration that could reshape expatriate arrival patterns beyond Barajas.
