Smartwings adds seven European cities as winter network takes off
Czech flag-carrier Smartwings has begun a rapid, four-day roll-out of seven new European routes from its Prague hub—part of the airline’s most ambitious winter expansion since its post-pandemic restructuring. The first wave on 23 October saw flights to Barcelona, Rome and Porto. On 24 October the inaugural Bilbao service departed, to be followed by Toulouse (25 Oct.), Brussels and Bucharest (26 Oct.). Frequencies range from twice weekly (Bilbao, Toulouse, Porto) to twelve times weekly on the strategically important Brussels run, aimed squarely at EU officials and corporate commuters.

Sales Director Michal Váňa reports “demand well above expectations”, noting that introductory one-way fares start at CZK 1,850 (≈ €74) including an 8 kg cabin bag. The carrier is simultaneously hiking existing frequencies—Paris rises to thrice daily and Málaga to twelve per week—bringing the Smartwings winter portfolio to roughly 30 destinations.

For international assignees and business visitors, the new links eliminate lengthy transfers via Frankfurt or Amsterdam and give Prague-based companies faster access to Europe’s Mediterranean tech clusters in Catalonia and Lazio, as well as EU institutions in Brussels. Mobility teams should update corporate booking tools to reflect the additional non-stop options and re-check corporate-fare agreements; some travel-management companies report negotiated discounts not yet mapped to the new flight numbers.

Operationally, the expansion underscores Smartwings’ pivot from its historic charter focus toward scheduled service after retiring the Czech Airlines brand in 2024. The airline is deploying its growing fleet of Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, equipped with streaming IFE and on-board Wi-Fi—features increasingly demanded by corporate travellers. Ground handling at Václav Havel Airport is being beefed up with extra self-service bag-drop kiosks to prevent check-in bottlenecks during peak morning banks.

Looking ahead, analysts say Smartwings’ willingness to commit capacity year-round should help Prague Airport sustain its newly enlarged winter timetable. For HR and relocation managers, the broader network reduces the need to route recruits through neighbouring hubs and can be leveraged when negotiating mobility budgets for 2026 assignments.
