Turin pilot project links Questura and municipal registry to speed residence-permit checks
The Prefecture of Turin launched a data-sharing agreement on 22 October 2025 between the city’s Anagrafe (civil registry) and the Questura to cross-verify foreign residents’ personal data and immigration status in real time. Signatories include Questore Paolo Sirna and Councillor Francesco Tresso.

Under the pilot, registry clerks will access encrypted police databases to confirm permit validity when citizens request services such as family-status certificates or change of address. Conversely, police will receive automatic alerts when a foreign national deregisters, helping identify expired permits and reduce overstays.

The initiative responds to complaints from both sides: employers have decried weeks-long waits for registry transcripts needed to finalise job contracts, while the Questura has struggled to track migrants who move without notifying authorities. If successful, the model could be rolled out across Piedmont and other regions, dovetailing with the Interior Ministry’s digitalisation drive funded by Italy’s PNRR recovery plan.
