Clock change triggers overnight rail timetable tweaks for cross-border commuters
Switzerland ended daylight-saving time at 03:00 on Sunday 26 October. While most travellers simply enjoyed an extra hour’s sleep, rail operator TILO (the SBB/Trenord joint venture in Ticino) published special “pajama train” schedules to bridge the repeated hour. Additional S10 and S20 services between Chiasso, Bellinzona, Locarno and Biasca ran on the new time, ensuring no gap in cross-border connectivity to Italy.

SBB Cargo likewise adjusted freight paths to avoid conflicts at the Gotthard Base Tunnel, a route that now handles up to 260 trains per day. For international travellers the main advice is to reconfirm early-morning services on 26 October, as some trains show duplicated times (e.g., 02:26 occurs twice). Airlines synchronise to UTC and were unaffected, but connecting air-rail passengers needed to allow margin.

Although routine, the bi-annual time shift can complicate duty-of-care tracking—HR software may record overlapping location stamps. Mobility teams should audit GPS and timesheet systems to ensure accurate working-time logs, especially for cross-border staff subject to the new tele-work tax agreements with Italy and France.
