Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport confirmed on 25 October that its long-awaited Terminal 3 will go live on 30 October, just days after the winter schedule begins. The RMB 53-billion ‘Airport City’ expansion equips Baiyun with five runways, two control towers and three passenger terminals, lifting design capacity to 120 million passengers a year and 4.5 million tonnes of cargo.
China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines, China United, Juneyao and Okay Airways will be the launch carriers. Domestic departures from T3 will close 40 minutes before take-off—10 minutes tighter than T1/T2—thanks to 72 self-service bag-drop machines and fully automated security lanes. Although China Eastern’s international flights will temporarily remain in T1, stakeholders expect a full migration by spring 2026, after customs and quarantine systems are certified.
The move is strategically important for corporate mobility. Many Fortune 500 suppliers clustered in the Greater Bay Area rely on same-day shuttles between Shanghai and Guangzhou; splitting China Eastern’s operations initially means travellers must double-check terminals to avoid missed flights. Once consolidated, T3’s 140,000 m² commercial zone and on-site high-speed rail link will cut door-to-door times for expatriates commuting to factories in Foshan, Dongguan and Zhongshan.
Airport officials highlight that the terminal incorporates one-stop border-clearance, biometric e-gates and 15 automated immigration lanes capable of processing 10,000 passengers an hour. The Guangdong Public Security Bureau says this will reduce average arrival processing time for foreign nationals from 42 minutes to under 25.
Travel managers should update relocation packs, arrange meet-and-greet services for VIPs during the transition week and remind staff holding flights from 30 October onward to verify the correct terminal on their e-tickets.
