Drone Sighting Forces Two-Hour Shutdown at Alicante-Elche Airport, Diverts 10 International Flights
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport—the fifth-busiest gateway for foreign holiday-makers to Spain—was brought to an abrupt standstill on the evening of 27 October when air-traffic controllers detected at least one drone inside the airport’s 5-km exclusion zone. AENA immediately activated its security protocol, suspending all arrivals and departures at 20:55 and alerting the Guardia Civil’s specialist drone-interdiction unit.

During the two-hour closure nine inbound flights from the UK and Germany and one from Denmark were diverted to Valencia, Murcia, Palma and Barcelona, while all outbound movements were held on the apron. Roughly 1,000 travellers faced missed onward connections and unexpected overnight stays; airport bus operators and local hotels reported a surge in last-minute demand.

The incident is the latest in a string of drone incursions at European airports and highlights the growing compliance burden on carriers operating to Spain: carriers must now file revised flight plans within minutes, and business-aviation operators face particularly steep ATC fees for short-notice diversions. AENA confirmed that it is accelerating installation of counter-UAS radar at Alicante and three other tourist gateways before the Christmas peak.

For corporate travel managers the disruption is a reminder to build extra layover buffers into itineraries for Spain’s Mediterranean airports and to ensure travellers register with airline apps for real-time rebooking. Companies relocating staff to the booming Costa Blanca technology hub should also review crisis-communication plans covering family members.

The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation that could lead to fines of up to €225,000 under Spain’s Law 18/2014 on Air Navigation Security. Until the culprits are identified, AENA is maintaining heightened vigilance and advising passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport.
