Cyprus Signals Readiness to Join the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor
Cyprus has formally expressed its intention to participate in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), a mega-connectivity project unveiled at the G20 summit that aims to link Indian ports with the Gulf and, eventually, European logistics hubs. Speaking in New Delhi on 30 October 2025, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos underlined that Cyprus’ deep-sea ports, sizeable merchant fleet and “one-stop shipping centre” give the island a natural role in the maritime leg of the corridor.

The minister highlighted that shipping already contributes more than 7 percent to Cyprus’ GDP and hosts hundreds of international operators. By plugging into IMEEC, Nicosia expects to draw additional trans-shipment traffic, catalyse investment in port upgrades at Limassol and Larnaca, and create new opportunities for logistics firms and maritime insurers based on the island. Indian officials welcomed the offer, noting that a Cypriot node would shorten sailing times to Eastern Mediterranean markets and provide redundancy to Suez-centric routes.

For global mobility managers, IMEEC’s expansion matters on several fronts. Faster cargo flows translate into leaner supply chains for multinationals, while improved air-sea connectivity typically triggers additional business-traveller demand. The Cypriot government is already preparing a talent-attraction package for shipping executives that will include fast-track residence permits and corporate tax incentives.

Analysts also see geopolitical dividends. Cyprus would gain a bigger voice in Indo-European trade dialogues, reinforcing its bid to join Schengen in the medium term. Moreover, the corridor could dovetail with EU plans to diversify energy imports, enabling Cypriot LNG terminals to serve as a redistribution hub.

Companies with regional assignee populations should monitor forthcoming infrastructure-tender announcements, as well as potential adjustments to Cyprus’ highly competitive non-domicile tax regime, which is likely to be extended to senior logistics professionals relocating under the IMEEC umbrella.
