Abu Dhabi introduces variable speed limits on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road
Motorists in the UAE capital will notice a new kind of digital road sign from Monday, 27 October, as Abu Dhabi Mobility activates the country’s first large-scale variable-speed-limit system. The technology allows traffic-management officials to lower or raise limits in real time—down to 60 km/h in heavy fog or up to 100 km/h once visibility clears—on the busy Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan corridor that links downtown to Yas Island and the Dubai highway.

For international assignees and cross-emirate commuters, the change matters for two reasons. First, Abu Dhabi uses an automatic number-plate recognition system to enforce fines; exceeding the displayed limit—even if it changes mid-journey—will trigger an instant penalty of AED 300 and four black points. Second, the pilot is part of a wider ‘smart mobility’ programme that will eventually integrate with Dubai’s Salik tolling and with federal plans for connected-vehicle data sharing. Mobility managers should alert expatriate staff who drive rental or company cars that they must watch the electronic boards and update their navigation apps.

Abu Dhabi Mobility said the roll-out will reduce accident rates by up to 20 percent, citing data from similar schemes in Europe. Dynamic limits will initially operate on a 16-kilometre stretch between Al Bateen and Qasr Al Bahr; further phases will extend to the E11 corridor in early 2026. Heavy-goods vehicles remain restricted to the right-hand lanes and to 80 km/h regardless of posted limits.

Companies that include ground transportation in their duty-of-care policies should review insurance coverage, driver briefing programmes and telematics settings to ensure compliance with the new rules. Failure to do so could expose employers to liability if staff accumulate black points and face licence suspensions.
