Indian Embassy Rolls Out Chip-Enabled E-Passports for UAE Residents
In a landmark upgrade to consular services, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate-General in Dubai have begun issuing next-generation, chip-enabled e-passports to the UAE’s 3.5 million-strong Indian community. Announced late on 28 October under India’s Passport Seva 2.0 programme, the launch means three separate Indian passport designs—the legacy booklet, the machine-readable version and the new biometric e-passport—will circulate simultaneously for the first time.

The e-passport embeds a secure RFID chip that stores the holder’s biometric data and digitally signed personal particulars, making the document far harder to forge and dramatically quicker for automated border checks. Embassy officials say UAE residents renewing their passports after 28 October will automatically receive the new design, while existing booklets remain valid until expiry.

For the UAE’s vast Indian workforce—and for companies that rely on their mobility—faster border processing should translate into shorter queues at airports such as Dubai International and Abu Dhabi Zayed International. Travel-management firms also expect lower document-verification rejections when applying for third-country visas, thanks to the new chip’s machine-readable security layer.

The Embassy is encouraging employers to audit workers’ passport validity early, noting that holders of older booklets may face additional scrutiny on certain high-security routes. Indian residents are being advised to keep digital copies of their old passports, update sponsorship records promptly and allow extra time for biometric enrolment when booking renewal appointments.

From a policy standpoint, the upgrade aligns neatly with the UAE’s own push toward fully digital immigration processes, including smart-gate and facial-recognition roll-outs at major airports. Consular officials say it also paves the way for future e-visa interoperability between India and Gulf states, potentially reducing paperwork for millions of business travellers each year.
