UK Issues Fresh Travel Advisory Listing Switzerland Amid Heightened Security Checks and Stricter Visa Guidelines
The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its global travel advice on 31 October, adding Switzerland to a list of countries where travellers should expect intensified security screening and documentation checks following recent European terror-alert escalations.

The advisory does not recommend against travel to Switzerland—whose threat level remains ‘medium’—but cautions UK nationals and resident third-country nationals that Swiss border guards have reinstituted selective Schengen-internal ID controls at key rail crossings from Germany, France and Italy. Anecdotal reports from Basel SBB and Geneva Cornavin indicate spot checks of work permits and proof of onward accommodation for non-EU nationals.

The update also reminds travellers that from 12 October Swiss airports start rolling out the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). While UK visitors remain visa-free, they should ensure passports have at least three months’ validity beyond the intended stay and must be prepared for biometric capture at e-gates. Business travellers on assignment exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period are urged to obtain the appropriate Swiss work authorisation well in advance; FCDO notes recent processing delays in cantons Zurich and Vaud.

For corporate mobility teams, the advisory means factoring additional buffer time into cross-border rail commutes—especially for commuters living in France’s Pays de Gex or Germany’s Baden region— and ensuring that employees carry Swiss permit cards at all times. HR should also brief UK-national staff that ETIAS pre-authorisation will come into force across Schengen in late 2026, but is not yet required.

Swiss authorities have not publicly detailed any new permanent controls but confirm that flexible checks are permissible under Schengen code Article 25 when responding to short-term security threats. Companies should monitor both Swiss Federal Police and FCDO channels for updates, particularly ahead of December’s high-profile WTO and UN conferences in Geneva.
