Christmas road closures and overnight transport boost to keep Hong Kong moving on 24-25 December

The Transport Department (TD) issued an extensive Christmas Eve and Christmas Day traffic blueprint on the evening of December 23. Key arteries in Central—including Lan Kwai Fong, D’Aguilar Street and sections of Queen’s Road Central—will close from 2 pm on December 24, with further phased closures and traffic diversions starting 9 pm. Similar contingency plans are ready for Tsim Sha Tsui, where police can trigger rolling shutdowns if crowds surge.

Public transport is being strengthened to offset the road closures. MTR will add train frequency from 3 pm and run overnight services on most lines, while five special KMB night-bus routes and extended green-minibus operations will serve outlying districts. The Central–Mid-Levels Escalator will run until 1 am, and the Airport Express will start earlier and finish later to accommodate outbound travellers catching red-eye flights.



The TD and Police emphasise crowd-safety measures after last year’s Halloween crush. On-street parking in the affected zones is suspended, and illegally parked vehicles face immediate towing. Real-time updates will flow through the HKeMobility app and local media.

Businesses holding late-night events should advise guests to rely on rail rather than taxis, and remind staff of adjusted first- and last-train times. Employers needing to move equipment into Central must complete loading before 1 pm on the 24th, or risk road blocks that last until 5 am on Christmas morning.
