Austria’s Transport Ministry has unveiled a limited ‘try-before-you-buy’ campaign for the popular Klimaticket nationwide rail pass. As reported on 22 April 2026, travellers who purchase a new Klimaticket between 1 May and 30 June can cancel after two months without paying the usual early-termination fee. The promotional price is €233 (regular) or €175 (reduced) for the trial period – identical to the prorated monthly cost of an annual pass but free of the standard lock-in. For expatriates and project assignees arriving this summer the offer removes a long-standing barrier: uncertainty over whether an annual ticket will pay off. Consultants estimate a Vienna-based assignee needs roughly four inter-city trips a month to break even on the nationwide pass versus regional options; the two-month window allows HR to gather real usage data before deciding whether to reimburse the full-year product. The government hopes the scheme will entice price-sensitive commuters off congested autobahns at a time when diesel exceeds €2.30 per litre. It may also ease pressure on company car fleets hit by supply-chain delays. Employers can buy the trial pass up-front and continue or cancel based on assignment extensions, reducing administrative friction. Mobility policy tips: include the Klimaticket option in arrival briefings; set diary reminders to submit the mandatory cancellation form and return the physical card if opting out; and remind staff that the offer applies only to new customers, not renewals. After 30 June the standard seven-month minimum contract period and €116.67 cancellation fee return.
