Czech Interior Ministry targets “benefit tourism”; amendment to tighten checks on holders of temporary protection

On 14 May 2026 the Interior Ministry revealed that police had detected widespread abuse of social benefits by foreigners who spend much of their time outside Czechia. A draft amendment would suspend payments after prolonged absences, digitise lease verification and tighten employer-guarantor duties. Employers of temporary-protection holders will face new compliance obligations once the bill is adopted, likely from 1 October 2026.
