Brussels warns nine states – including Austria – over prolonged Schengen checks

On 3 June 2026 Trans.info reported that the European Commission has publicly warned nine Schengen countries – Austria among them – that their long-running internal border checks should be phased out. The Commission argues that falling irregular migration and new digital systems mean fixed checkpoints are no longer proportionate. From 14 June to 12 December 2026 Deutsche Bahn will close the Passau–Regensburg route, forcing both freight and long-distance passenger services to detour through Austria.
