G7 summit triggers temporary border controls between France and Switzerland
In preparation for the G7 leaders’ summit in Évian-les-Bains (15-17 June 2026), Switzerland reinstated Schengen-internal border controls with France from 10 to 19 June. The Swiss Federal Council says the move is necessary to secure VIP motorcades and prevent protests spilling across the frontier. Euronews reports that checks apply to all road, rail and lake-boat crossings, with random inspections inside a 20-km belt. France has reciprocated by increasing customs and gendarmerie patrols on its side of the border and activating fast-track lanes for accredited delegates. Seven major crossings—including Bardonnex, Ferney-Voltaire and Thônex-Vallard—remain open 24/7, while dozens of secondary roads are closed entirely. Business travellers should expect queues of up to 45 minutes at peak times. The Geneva Chamber of Commerce recommends carrying proof of hotel booking or meeting invitations, as officers may ask for justification of travel. Holders of French residence permits are advised to take their physical card, not just the ANEF digital certificate, to avoid delays. Logistics firms warn that the temporary closure of the A1 southbound on 15–17 June could disrupt just-in-time deliveries into the Rhône-Alpes region. Shippers are rerouting via the Saint-Julien-en-Genevois crossing or through Bourg-en-Bresse to reach Lyon. The measures underline how political summits can still override Schengen free-movement rules, a reminder for mobility managers to build contingency routing into travel policies.
