Border Guard & Police Conduct National Sweep: 1,200 Checks and 140 Detentions Over Two Days
The Nadwiślański Border Guard Command has released results of a 8–9 June nationwide operation targeting irregular migration networks. Nearly 650 officers, working with local police in Mazowieckie, Łódzkie and Kujawsko-Pomorskie provinces, inspected 1,200 workplaces, hostels and transport hubs. They verified the lawful residence of 260 foreign nationals in the central region alone and detained 140 people country-wide. Most detainees were overstayers from South-East Asia and the Caucasus employed informally in logistics and light manufacturing. Ninety return proceedings have already been opened, and four individuals deemed security risks were placed in closed centres pending deportation. Authorities say the blitz was driven by evidence that some staffing agencies have resumed post-pandemic “visa-run” schemes via Serbia and the Balkan route. For HR and site-managers the message is clear: labour-inspectorate visits are likely to increase. Companies using subcontractors for seasonal peaks should audit document retention, ensure contracts match declared job roles and keep copies of residence cards on-site. Penalties for facilitating illegal work were doubled this year to PLN 30,000 per person, and repeat offenders risk suspension of recruitment-agency licences. The sweep also signals that Poland is aligning practice with the EU Pact’s emphasis on enforcement and returns. Mobility teams should brief expatriates on carrying ID at all times, especially when travelling by rail through internal-border checkpoints with Germany and Lithuania.
