Border Guard Nabs 45 Migrants on Polish-Lithuanian Green Border
The Podlaskie Border Guard reported on 16 June that patrols captured 45 third-country nationals who crossed from Lithuania outside official checkpoints over the previous weekend. The group, originating from Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia and Afghanistan, was intercepted near Rutka-Tartak, Sejny and Puńsk with the help of Territorial Defence soldiers. One Ukrainian facilitator was arrested for transporting migrants onward in a private car. Under bilateral readmission rules, all apprehended persons were handed back to Lithuanian authorities within 48 hours. The incident underscores the shifting migration route that has seen smugglers avoid the heavily fortified Polish-Belarusian frontier in favour of forest tracks along the Suwałki Gap. While numbers remain modest compared with 2021’s crisis, Polish officials worry that the EU’s new Migration Pact may encourage traffickers to test less-guarded segments. The government recently deployed additional thermal-imaging cameras and drone units to the 104-km Lithuanian border and is considering temporary reintroduction of checks during peak periods.

For businesses and travellers navigating these evolving border protocols, VisaHQ’s Poland portal (https://www.visahq.com/poland/) offers up-to-date guidance on entry requirements, work permits and residence cards, and can streamline the application process entirely online—helpful if spot checks or new visa obligations are introduced at short notice.

For companies relocating staff between Polish and Baltic offices, the uptick could translate into longer passport queues at Budzisko and Ogrodniki crossings if spot controls increase. Employers are advised to monitor travel advisories and ensure non-EU employees carry all residence documentation even within the Schengen area. Human-rights NGOs, meanwhile, urge Warsaw to expand legal labour-migration pathways—such as the simplified seasonal-work permit—to reduce demand for smugglers.
