Visa application charges jump up to 25 % – Finder analysis
A new analysis by Australian comparison site Finder shows that visa application charges (VACs) introduced on 1 July 2026 are far steeper than the routine CPI indexation applied in previous years, with some categories increasing by more than 200 per cent. The largest single rise hits the Resident Return Visa (subclass 155/157) – the critical document that allows permanent residents to leave Australia and return – which has surged from AUD 490 to AUD 1,475, a 201 per cent leap. Student visas now cost AUD 2,500, up from AUD 2,000, while the partner visa price-tag has climbed to AUD 11,710. Working-holiday makers face first-year fees of AUD 840 and second-year fees of AUD 1,000, adding nearly AUD 500 to the cost of a two-year backpacking stint. Finder warns that the hikes come as Australians grapple with a broader cost-of-living squeeze.

For globally mobile professionals and their employers the higher charges add thousands of dollars in upfront cash-flow. Businesses sponsoring dependants will need to budget for each family member, and mobility policies that reimburse government fees should be updated immediately. Migration agents note that fee increases apply on the date an application is actually submitted, not when it is drafted. Time-critical moves lodged after business hours on 30 June may already be incurring the higher tariffs. The federal government defends the changes as necessary to fund service improvements and deter speculative applications. However, industry groups such as the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry say the step-change risks discouraging talent at a time when labour shortages persist in engineering, healthcare and advanced manufacturing.
