UAE allows citizens to renew Emirates ID up to one year before expiry
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has quietly introduced a major procedural change that will be welcomed by every Emirati who travels frequently. Effective 14 July 2026, citizens may now file for a new Emirates ID fully 12 months before the card’s expiry date—double the previous six-month renewal window. The Emirates ID is the anchor document that underpins almost every mobility-related transaction in the UAE, from applying for or renewing a passport and residency visas for family members to passing through automated immigration gates at the country’s airports. By moving to a longer renewal horizon, the ICP is giving nationals far greater flexibility to plan international travel and avoid the last-minute bottlenecks that typically arise during the summer peak and ahead of the December holiday exodus. For business travellers in particular, the change eliminates a common pain-point: sudden trip cancellations triggered by an expiring ID. Companies that post Emirati executives abroad on rotation will be able to align ID renewals with assignment cycles and avoid emergency courier shipments of new cards. The ICP has also linked the new rule to its earlier decision allowing passports to be renewed one year early, meaning both documents can now be processed in a single digital transaction—a significant reduction in paperwork and government touchpoints. The move supports the federal “Zero Government Bureaucracy” programme, which aims to cut administrative steps across all public services by 50 per cent by 2028. Maj-Gen Suhail Al Khaili, ICP Director-General, said the change was designed to offer citizens “greater flexibility and more control over their travel plans”. While the announcement targets nationals, expatriate professionals should keep an eye on the policy: officials told The National that a similar extension for resident ID holders is “under study” and could be rolled out later this year. Practical takeaway: Emiratis whose ID expires any time before July 2027 can submit renewal applications immediately via the ICP Smart App or approved typing centres. Applicants should ensure their biometric data are up to date and may combine the transaction with an early passport renewal to receive both documents by secure courier within five working days.
