Officials said the promotion is intended to raise funds to modernize passport-processing technology after a year of record demand that saw routine issuance times stretch to 14 weeks. The department stressed that the commemorative design is optional and that regular $165 passports remain available at standard processing times. Although legally equivalent to ordinary passports, the flashy design poses potential headaches. Some foreign border officers may view the unfamiliar cover with suspicion, potentially causing secondary inspection delays. Frequent business travelers may wish to keep or apply for a second, regular-format passport to avoid surprises on tight itineraries. Companies with large international travel budgets should update travel-risk advisories and educate employees about the novelty document. The rollout also revives debate over politicization of travel documents. Critics argue that placing an incumbent president’s image on a federal credential blurs the line between government functions and campaign branding. State Department lawyers counter that commemorative U.S. passports have featured historical figures before, noting the 1976 bicentennial edition bearing George Washington’s portrait. Mobility managers should track carrier guidance; some airlines have already asked staff to familiarize themselves with the new design to reduce boarding-gate confusion. The department says it will brief foreign governments through diplomatic channels and share specimen images via the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Public Key Directory in advance of the first issuances next week.
