The Hautes-Pyrénées prefecture has published eleven separate arrêtés spelling out how road traffic around Lourdes will be tightly choreographed from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 September during Pope Léon XIV’s pilgrimage to the Marian shrine. The centrepiece is a reservation of the RN21 between Tarbes and Lourdes for authorised vehicles only from 14:00 on Saturday until 07:30 Monday, with two total closures (18:30-19:30 Saturday and 06:30-07:30 Monday) to allow the papal convoy safe passage. Several departmental roads (RD64, RD821, RD937, RD940, RD13 and the route de Bartrès) will be fully closed or restricted to coaches bearing red permits, emergency services and local residents able to show proof of address. The RD821 and RD821A will serve as a giant coach-park for thousands of pilgrim buses, while a dedicated shuttle corridor on the RD64 will funnel passengers between a remote park-and-ride in Ibos and the sanctuary. Parking bans take effect from 10:00 on Saturday along the RN21 and other approach roads, with tow-away enforcement and €35 fines. Detailed diversion itineraries have been mapped so that heavy goods vehicles and business travellers can bypass the closures via the A64, RD935 and mountain routes. The prefect insists exemptions for supply chains, medical appointments and emergency repairs remain in place, but urges companies to schedule deliveries outside the 54-hour window. For international visitors the message is clear: avoid self-drive travel into Lourdes this weekend. SNCF has added late-night TER services to Tarbes, while Toulouse-Blagnac and Pau-Pyrenees airports are operating extra shuttles to connect with special TGVs. Rental-car firms have warned of surcharges for returns in closed zones. Logistics providers have activated contingency plans, rerouting high-value freight away from the RN21 corridor. Businesses with assignees in south-west France should circulate the new maps and authorisation rules, and prepare proof-of-residence letters where necessary. Failure to comply could strand staff or critical shipments at roadblocks. With 150,000 pilgrims expected each day, authorities say the extraordinary controls are essential to safety—but they will also test the resilience of regional mobility networks.
