Study-permit wait for Indian applicants climbs to seven weeks, IRCC warns
Just as winter-semester admission letters hit inboxes, Indian students eyeing Canada got an unwelcome surprise: the country-specific study-permit estimate has stretched to seven weeks, according to the processing-times tool updated 14 October and highlighted in an IRCC.com brief on 21 October. The one-week increase reverses a September dip and reflects seasonal surges as applicants race to secure visas for January-start programs. Work-permit processing for Indian nationals, by contrast, held steady at 11 weeks, while visitor-visa waits fell marginally to 29 days. Why the spike? IRCC does not publish country-level queue data, but universities report heavier-than-usual deferrals after last year’s housing-cost crunch, leading many students to delay entry until 2027. That has compressed demand into the current window. Security-screening backlogs and staffing turnover at IRCC’s Bengaluru and Chandigarh missions are also cited by consultants. For colleges, the numbers jeopardise orientation schedules and tuition cash-flow. Several Ontario institutes have already issued contingency guidance, urging students to register for remote delivery if permits do not arrive by 15 December. Agents in Delhi are advising clients to front-load police clearances and biometrics to shave days off the timeline. Students should treat the seven-week figure as an 80-percent confidence interval, not a deadline. Submitting an error-free application—tuition-fee receipt, digital photograph, Statement of Purpose and proof of funds—remains the best hedge. Where starts cannot be moved, some institutions will defer acceptance at no extra cost; others may impose a CDN $250 administration fee. Clarity now can avert costly last-minute flight changes in January.
