Super Typhoon Champi Triggers Taiwan Travel Alert for Australians
DFAT has issued an updated travel advisory for Taiwan dated 22 October 2026 after Super Typhoon Champi swept across the island’s north. Although the overall rating remains “Exercise normal safety precautions”, the notice warns of severe winds, heavy rainfall and coastal storm surges affecting Taipei, Taoyuan International Airport and surrounding business parks. Flight delays and cancellations are already reported, with some airlines offering fee-free rebooking. Companies with Asia-Pacific leadership meetings scheduled in Taipei this week are activating contingency plans—shifting sessions online or diverting delegates through Kaohsiung where conditions are milder. DFAT urges travellers to monitor airline apps, the Taiwan Central Weather Administration and local media, and to follow any typhoon-day office closures ordered by authorities. The advisory also reminds visitors that they must complete the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) within three days before arrival. Firms using third-party travel desks should verify that the digital form is lodged; travellers who forget are still being asked to submit paper copies on landing, delaying airport processing during peak disruption. With typhoon season running to November, mobility teams are advised to maintain flexible ticketing and ensure staff know earthquake and landslide procedures, as heavy rain can destabilise slopes in northern Taiwan.
