The haul included 270 kg of loose tobacco arriving from Manaus without import permits, diagnostic ultrasound probes, prescription drugs, premium wines and dozens of high-end smartphones and designer bags.
Receita Federal said the seizures were triggered by inconsistencies in advance airway bills matched against passenger declarations. In several cases, quantities suggested commercial intent despite goods being declared as “personal use”. Medical devices lacked Anvisa registration, posing potential safety risks.
Viracopos is Brazil’s second-largest air-cargo gateway and a preferred entry point for multinational supply chains serving São Paulo’s tech corridor. The customs post has recently upgraded to 100 % X-ray inspection of courier consignments under 50 kg, narrowing the fast-track channel often used for door-to-door household-goods shipments.
Mobility stakeholders should advise assignees relocating through Viracopos to separate strictly personal items from any commercial samples and to carry invoices and proof of ownership. Failure to prove end-use can result in seizure, fines of up to 50 % of the goods’ value, and delays to residence registration, which in Brazil depends on presenting a cleared baggage receipt.
The airport authority stressed that passenger flows remain normal and that security wait times are unaffected, but warned that selective secondary inspections will continue through November.
