Fine Gael MEP Colm Walsh told Mayo Live on 22 December 2025 that the recently adopted EU Migration and Asylum Pact represents a “turning point” for Ireland’s immigration system, forecasting that Dublin will move from an opt-in stance to a proactive role in joint border management and relocation mechanisms.
Walsh—who sits on the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties (LIBE) Committee—helped negotiate compromise text that allows Ireland to participate voluntarily in EU-level solidarity contributions without jeopardising the Common Travel Area with the United Kingdom. He argues the Pact will give Ireland greater predictability in asylum processing, reducing ad-hoc arrangements such as hotel accommodation purchases.
