HKIA’s revamped Terminal 2 to open in May, target 15 million passengers in 2026
Hong Kong International Airport confirmed that its rebuilt Terminal 2 will open on May 27 2026 and is expected to process 15 million travellers this year. Fifteen mainly low-cost airlines will relocate there, easing pressure on Terminal 1 and shortening processing times thanks to extensive self-service technology. The extra capacity supports post-pandemic growth in business and leisure travel and strengthens Hong Kong’s role as a regional mobility hub.
Outbound travel hits 1.44 million trips in first four days of Lunar New Year
Hong Kong residents made 1.44 million departures between 16 and 19 February, 20 per cent more than in 2019, signalling a full rebound in outbound leisure and family travel. Inbound visitor numbers lagged behind, with mainland arrivals down almost 13 per cent, meaning the city still faces a tourism deficit. Mobility teams should anticipate peak-season capacity crunches while the government ramps up campaigns to attract business and leisure visitors.
Visitor arrivals jump 10 % on first day of Lunar New Year, buoying Hong Kong tourism
Immigration data analysed by Travel and Tour World show a 10 per cent year-on-year rise in visitor arrivals on the first day of the 2026 Lunar New Year, with mainland tourists dominating the flow. Faster e-Channel processing and additional rail and flight capacity helped manage the spike, driving strong hotel and retail performance. The rebound offers both opportunities and cost pressures for companies moving staff in and out of Hong Kong.
