Germany clarifies rules on visa-free entry and ETIAS ahead of late-2026 launch
In a guidance note summarised on 11 March, Germany’s Make-it-in-Germany partner platform reminded travellers from some 60 visa-exempt countries—including the US, UK, Canada, Japan and Singapore—that they remain entitled to stay in Germany for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but will soon need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorisation. The EU-wide system, priced at €7 and valid for three years, is now slated for a Q4 2026 start after multiple delays. The clarification aims to stem confusion created by mixed media reports that suggested visa-free travel might end altogether. In reality, ETIAS functions more like the US ESTA: travellers apply online, receive approval within minutes in most cases, and continue to benefit from short-stay visa freedom. Those who hold a Schengen visa, a German residence title or an EU Blue Card issued by Germany do not need ETIAS. For companies with high volumes of short business visits, the recommendation is to begin mapping traveller populations and building ETIAS application capability into self-booking or travel-management tools well before the go-live date. HR should also brief employees on the 90/180-day rule, which remains enforceable and can trigger fines or future entry bans if exceeded. The note confirms that carriers will conduct ETIAS checks at online check-in through IATA’s Timatic database. Travellers arriving without a valid authorisation can be denied boarding, making advance compliance critical once the system is active.
