The simmering dispute between Spain’s central government and the Balearic Islands over migration policy escalated on 10 April 2026. Balearic spokesman Antoni Costa warned that the regional executive will “return to the courts” if Madrid pushes ahead with a decree extending and enlarging the compulsory redistribution of unaccompanied migrant children (MENAs) among Spain’s autonomous communities. Under the draft decree, Baleares’ allocation would rise from 406 to 434 places as part of a nationwide capacity increase. Palma argues that the islands’ social-care budget and housing stock are already overstretched by record tourist numbers and post-pandemic rent inflation. The regional government previously filed—and lost—an injunction in 2025 but insists it will continue to challenge what it calls an “imposed, unfunded mandate”. Corporate-mobility teams with staff in the Balearics should expect heightened political rhetoric and possible delays in social-service processing times, which can indirectly affect family immigration cases that rely on the same child-protection agencies for background checks. NGOs have urged both governments to prioritise the best interests of the children over inter-institutional wrangling. The Interior Ministry says the decree is necessary to avoid humanitarian saturation in entry points such as the Canary Islands and Ceuta. It maintains that EU funding will cover part of the cost, a claim the Balearics dispute. A final vote in the Council of Ministers is expected by the end of April.
