A pan-European nationalist alliance led by the Patriots for Europe group has called on Brussels to scale back the Schengen visa-free regime, citing Spain’s new mass regularisation as a ‘pull factor’ for irregular migration. In a statement released on 25 April, spokesman Kurt Zindulka argued that granting status to up to 500,000 migrants would ‘incentivise secondary movements’ into northern Europe and undermine border security. The group proposes re-introducing internal border checks specifically against travellers originating from Spain, echoing temporary controls that Austria and Germany imposed during the 2015 migration crisis. Although the European Commission can authorise limited suspensions under Articles 25 and 29 of the Schengen Borders Code, any move would face steep legal and political hurdles. Spanish officials dismissed the demand as electioneering ahead of the 2027 European elections, noting that regularised migrants will receive Spanish residence cards—valid for travel within Schengen—only after security screening. Business lobbies warned that even talk of rolling back free movement could unsettle investors and disrupt cross-border supply chains that rely on just-in-time travel by technicians and sales teams. For global mobility managers the episode is a reminder that national immigration measures can trigger political blow-back elsewhere in the EU. Contingency plans should anticipate the possibility—however remote—of ad-hoc border controls or carrier document checks on routes from Spain to northern Europe that could slow travel for assignees.
