EU Agrees to Shift Unemployment Benefit Burden for Cross-Border Workers—Swiss Costs Could Rise
EU ministers have backed a rule giving cross-border commuters unemployment benefits from their country of employment for up to six months. If Switzerland adopts the change under its free-movement treaty, Bern—and indirectly Swiss employers—could face hundreds of millions in extra costs for some 400 000 frontier workers.
