Following the summit, the president will travel to Rome for bilateral talks with Italian President Sergio Mattarella on 5 May and will be received by Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican on 6 May, coinciding with the annual swearing-in of new Swiss Guards. The agenda includes bilateral labour-market issues, the fallout from the Crans-Montana New Year’s Eve fire involving Italian victims, and the broader state of EU-Swiss relations. For international companies, the itinerary underscores Bern’s strategy of maintaining open diplomatic channels with key partners even as domestic debates on immigration intensify. Italy supplies the largest contingent of cross-border commuters to Switzerland, and any souring of ties could affect work-permit processing and commuter flows through the southern border. Parmelin is also expected to meet Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin in Yerevan to discuss Dublin’s forthcoming EU Council presidency, which will steer the next phase of talks on the EU’s Entry/Exit System and labour-mobility files affecting Switzerland.
