Customs sets up cross-agency command centre to keep checkpoints flowing through peak holiday
Anticipating record passenger and vehicle flows during Golden Week, Hong Kong Customs launched a joint command centre on 1 May that will operate 24/7 until 5 May. Sing Tao’s Headline Daily reports that senior officers toured Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and West Kowloon stations on 3 May to monitor wait times and boost staff morale. The centre links Customs, Immigration, Police, the Transport Department and bridge authorities, as well as their mainland and Macao counterparts, through a real-time dashboard that displays queue lengths, lane availability and incident alerts. If clearance times breach preset thresholds, personnel can be redeployed within 15 minutes—a significant upgrade on the one-hour reallocation cycle used in 2025. For freight operators, the timing coincides with the rollout of Phase 3 of the Trade Single Window, which digitises 28 additional permit types. Early feedback from trucking firms indicates that submitting manifests online has shaved at least ten minutes off each road-cargo inspection, partly offsetting holiday congestion. Business-travel managers should note that trusted-traveller e-channels for frequent flyers remain open but may be reassigned to general use during late-evening surges. Corporates are advised to schedule airport departures outside the 18:00-22:00 peak or to budget an extra 30 minutes for security and immigration formalities. The exercise is also a dress rehearsal for the opening of Hong Kong International Airport’s revamped Terminal 2 on 27 May, when another spike in staffing coordination will be required. Lessons learned this week will feed into the airport’s integrated operations centre playbook.
