Border officers seize 14 kg of heroin hidden in luggage at Sydney Airport
Australian Border Force (ABF) and Federal Police have charged three men after intercepting 14 kilograms of heroin concealed in carry-on suitcases arriving from Bangkok last month. Details released on 4 May and updated on 5 May confirm that officers discovered plastic packages sewn into bag linings during routine X-ray screening. When informed that they would face further questioning, two suspects attempted to flee the sterile area, triggering a foot chase through the arrivals hall. One man was apprehended after a member of the public intervened; the second was located in Surry Hills days later. A third accomplice landed on a separate flight the same evening and was arrested after a similar concealment was detected. All three have been charged with importing a commercial quantity of a controlled drug under section 307.1(1) of the Criminal Code, an offence carrying a potential life sentence. They are due to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on 24 June 2026. ABF Superintendent Elke West said the case illustrates “the sophisticated methods organised crime will use to exploit passenger routes,” while AFP Detective Superintendent Davina Copelin praised the quick actions of airport officers and bystanders. The heroin haul—worth an estimated A$9 million on the street—will be chemically destroyed. For mobility and travel-risk managers, the incident underscores heightened screening at Australian gateways ahead of the July school-holiday rush. Travellers should allow extra time for baggage checks and expect increased canine patrols on flights originating in South-East Asia.
