During the government’s Worker Week fair in Brasília, the Ministry of Management and Innovation partnered with the Federal District police to issue hundreds of the new Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), Brazil’s single-number identity card that uses the CPF tax ID as the sole identifier. The outreach push comes as more than 5.2 million CINs have already been issued nationwide. The card, available in physical and digital formats with a QR code and biometric match, is recognised across Mercosur countries, replacing the older RG booklet for regional travel. First-time issuance is free, and citizens can elevate their GOV.BR account to the highest security level once the digital CIN is activated—streamlining access to immigration services and social-security benefits. Brasília has extended the deadline for linking biometric data to benefits until 31 December 2026, giving employers time to align HR systems. From 2027 new benefit applicants must present a biometrics-enabled CIN, and from 2028 the card will be mandatory for all benefit renewals, effectively phasing out legacy IDs. For HR-mobility teams the unified ID reduces document-verification headaches when onboarding transferred staff, opening bank accounts or registering with the Federal Police. The digital version also supports remote identity proofing—critical for hybrid assignment models. Consulates have begun accepting the CIN as proof of identity for passport applications, and airlines are expected to recognise the QR code at domestic security checkpoints later this year, further easing door-to-door travel.
