UK and Bangladesh agree to pilot real-time bank-statement verification to curb visa fraud

At a joint economic dialogue in Dhaka on 8 May, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke and Bangladesh’s Finance Secretary Khairuzzaman Mozumder unveiled a plan to integrate U-K‐developed fintech tools into Bangladeshi banks’ customer-verification systems. The initiative will allow UK visa officers to confirm an applicant’s balance and transaction history directly with participating banks, closing a loophole long exploited by forged statements. According to Bangladesh’s state news agency BSS, the pilot is part of a broader UK package supporting Dhaka’s financial-sector reforms. But for mobility professionals the immigration angle is paramount: over 20,000 Bangladeshi nationals applied for UK work and study visas in the year ending February 2026, with document authenticity accounting for nearly a quarter of refusals. Once live, the scheme will mirror the “Credence Check” service already in place with Indian and Nigerian banks, reducing verification time from an average 21 days to 48 hours. Employers sponsoring Skilled Workers from Bangladesh should still budget the standard six-week processing window until the system proves stable, but can expect faster decision times by Q4 2026 if rollout stays on track. The two governments also pledged to exchange data on “visa-system abuse routes” and step up airline liaison to detect impostor travel. UK officials say success could accelerate plans to reopen a dedicated Visa Application Centre in Chittagong, easing travel for applicants outside Dhaka. For mobility programmes the message is clear: clean financial documentation will soon become non-negotiable, and candidates with opaque funding sources will find it harder to secure UK entry clearance.
