Weekend traffic alert: ADAC warns of queues at Austrian borders as German controls continue
The German motoring association ADAC predicts heavy traffic on key Alpine routes – including the A10 Tauern and A13 Brenner motorways – between 12 and 14 June 2026. Although Austria plans to drop stationary border posts next week, Germany’s intensified entry checks remain in force, and ADAC flags possible wait times of 30–60 minutes at Suben (A3) and Walserberg (A8). The warning coincides with early-season holiday traffic from Scandinavia and the first school breaks in parts of northern Italy, sending campervans southward through Austria. In Tirol, local «Abfahrtssperren» (exit bans from the motorway during congestion) are already active on secondary roads to prevent GPS-diverted spill-over traffic. For mobility managers the message is practical: schedule transfers outside peak hours, advise assignees to carry employment letters in case they are questioned at German checkpoints, and remind drivers that Austria’s motorway vignette is mandatory even for short detours. Longer-term, ADAC expects queues to ease after 15 June if German authorities follow Austria in winding down fixed controls – a decision Berlin has not yet confirmed.
