Macau Extends Iris Biometric Lanes to Non-Resident Workers and Students, Boosting Cross-Border Flows With Hong Kong
Macau’s Public Security Police Force on 11 June opened its iris-recognition clearance system to two new groups—non-resident workers and overseas students enrolled at local universities. The upgrade means that anyone holding a “blue card” work permit or student endorsement can now register and use the city’s 152 second-generation iris lanes across six checkpoints, including the Macau end of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and both ferry terminals. The system, launched in 2023 and previously reserved for Macau ID holders, verifies travellers in two seconds and has processed more than 35 million crossings.

It was extended to Hong Kong permanent residents last year, and officials say 590 000 Hongkongers—about a quarter of those registered for Macau’s automated channels—have already opted in. By May 2026, over half of Hong Kong users at traditional e-Channels had migrated to iris clearance. Expanding eligibility is expected to ease pressure during peak commuting periods for the 27 000 Hong Kong residents who work, study or conduct daily business in Macau, while also speeding up arrivals of foreign casino and hospitality staff. For multinational employers rotating teams between the two SARs, the move reduces the administrative burden of securing frequent-traveller privileges and could shave minutes off door-to-door journey times. Authorities conducted stress tests in late May and report lane throughput of up to 2 700 people per hour, slightly ahead of fingerprint e-Channels. The technology also benefits travellers with worn fingerprints—a common problem among catering and construction staff—by using a contactless iris scan that is less affected by occupational wear and tear. Immigration consultants caution firms to update mobility policies to reflect the new biometric option, particularly regarding data-privacy consent for overseas assignees. Macau’s Public Security Forces Affairs Bureau states that iris templates are encrypted and stored locally, but employers may still need to brief expatriates on cross-border data-handling differences between Hong Kong and Macau before enrolment.
