European Parliament passes tough new EU Return Directive, Czech Republic prepares for implementation
The European Parliament approved the new EU Return Directive on 17 June 2026, giving member states—including the Czech Republic—up to two years’ detention powers and the option to create deportation hubs outside the EU. Prague, which supported the reform, must update its Alien Residence Act within 12 months. Czech officials see a chance to improve the country’s low return-enforcement rate, but NGOs warn of overcrowded detention centres and legal challenges. Global-mobility teams should prepare for stricter document controls and longer lead times on work-permit issues.
