AusAlert Community Tests Completed—National Warning SMS Will Reach Tourists Too
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed on 23 June that field tests of ‘AusAlert’, Australia’s new cell-broadcast emergency-alert system, have concluded successfully in nine pilot towns across every state and territory. AusAlert will push a siren-tone Critical Alert to every compatible mobile device nationwide during a 27 July test. Unlike the old state-based SMS system, the broadcast is location-based and does not rely on SIM registration—meaning overseas visitors, international students and business travellers roaming on foreign numbers will receive the same warnings as residents.

Travellers preparing for business or study trips may also need to confirm entry requirements, and VisaHQ can help streamline that process. The company’s Australian portal (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) provides an easy, guided way to secure eVisitor, ETA and other visas, allowing mobility teams to coordinate documentation and safety briefings—such as AusAlert notifications—for personnel in a single workflow.

For global mobility programmes, the change simplifies duty-of-care communications: companies no longer need to register every visitor with multiple state apps. However, the mandatory nature of Critical Alerts means executives presenting in boardrooms or pilots on layovers may have their phones ring at full volume; mobility managers should brief travelling staff to mute devices by switching to airplane mode during the test window if disruption is a concern. NEMA says multi-language support will roll out by October, starting with simplified Chinese, Hindi and Arabic voice-over prompts—mirroring the languages most requested at Sydney Airport’s arrivals desk. Airports and cruise terminals are being issued new kiosk posters explaining the alert tones to arriving passengers.
