IRCC cuts in-Canada work-permit processing time to 144 days
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) quietly refreshed its public processing-time tracker late on 24 June, showing that in-Canada work-permit applications are now being finalized in an average of 144 days—down almost four weeks from the previous update on 17 June. The improvement applies to applicants who are already inside Canada and have applied either to extend an existing work permit or to switch from another temporary status. Although 144 days is still well above IRCC’s 120-day service standard, it is the shortest turnaround posted so far in 2026 and the first meaningful reduction since February.

Employers or individuals who would rather not navigate these shifting timelines alone can lean on VisaHQ for practical, end-to-end help. Through its Canadian portal, the service offers document checklists, expert review and real-time tracking so that applications go in complete the first time—an easy way to capitalize on any window of faster processing.

IRCC’s dashboard also shows modest gains for study-permit extensions (-7 days for applicants from India and Nigeria) and visitor-visa extensions (-5 days on average). A faster decision matters for employers scheduling start dates and for foreign workers who need a valid authorization to remain employed and insured. Human-resources teams that rely on the ‘implied-status’ rule—allowing staff to keep working while an extension is in process—still face months of uncertainty, but the latest numbers suggest the backlog of inland temporary-resident files is finally shrinking. Corporate mobility managers should refresh internal lead-time charts, as the new benchmark means applications filed this week could be completed before employees exhaust six months of implied status. Advisers also warn clients to build in extra time for biometrics and medicals, which are not counted in IRCC’s online clock. If the trend holds, IRCC could meet its 120-day target by early autumn. Companies planning large fall deployments—particularly in tech and seasonal agriculture—are being urged to submit complete, error-free packages now to benefit from the shorter queue.
