‘Operación Salida’ begins: 4.8 million holiday trips strain Spain’s roads, rails and airports
Spain’s summer exodus is officially under way. The Directorate-General of Traffic (DGT) launched its first ‘Operación Salida’ of 2026 at 15:00 on Friday, expecting 4.8 million road journeys by Sunday midnight. The campaign combines 780 fixed speed cameras, 545 mobile radar units and 39 aircraft and drones to curb risky driving. Mobility pressure is equally intense in the air. Airport operator Aena schedules more than 22,000 flights between 3 and 5 July – 4 % above 2025 – with Madrid-Barajas (3,700 flights) and Barcelona-El Prat (3,300) topping the list.

For those international travelers who still need to sort out last-minute documentation, VisaHQ can simplify the process. The company’s dedicated Spain portal offers up-to-date visa requirements, digital application tools and express courier services, so passengers can focus on navigating the traffic and crowded terminals rather than embassies.

Airlines have been asked to stagger check-in openings to avoid security-queue bottlenecks in the early hours of Saturday. On the rails, RENFE, Iryo and Ouigo will run 3,100 long-distance services, adding 348,000 extra seats. Yet a looming 24-hour rail strike on 15 July, confirmed by the StrikeTracker platform, may complicate return journeys, so travel managers are encouraging employees to keep flexible tickets or consider car-sharing options. New rules debut this summer: all private cars must carry the V-16 flashing emergency beacon instead of the old warning triangles, and the government has launched a 24-hour victims’ hotline for crash support in multiple languages – a boon for expatriates unfamiliar with local procedures. For global mobility teams the message is preparedness. Companies relocating staff this weekend should budget extra transit time to shipping schedules, book fully refundable hotel rooms, and remind drivers that fines in Spain are enforceable against foreigners and can be demanded on the spot. As the DGT forecasts over 100 million road trips between now and the end of August, the 2026 high season is shaping up to be the busiest – and potentially riskiest – since the pandemic.
