Eurostar has issued an urgent travel bulletin warning passengers that services between London and Amsterdam will bypass Rotterdam Centraal until at least Monday, 6 July, because a lineside fire badly damaged signalling and overhead equipment near the Dutch port city. The operator’s live-service page, updated at 17:56 BST on 5 July, shows multiple trains were either cancelled outright or re-routed via an inland diversion that adds up to 90 minutes to journey times. All London-bound and Brussels-bound trains are still running through to Amsterdam, but without the intermediate Rotterdam call—removing a key boarding/alighting point for thousands of UK-based corporate commuters who use the Netherlands’ second-largest city as a base for North-Sea energy and agri-tech projects. Seat availability on diverted services is described by Eurostar as “very limited”. Travellers booked to board at Rotterdam may cancel or rebook free of charge. Business-critical impact is significant. Deloitte Netherlands estimates that 12 % of quarterly UK–NL business trips involve a Rotterdam stop. With Amsterdam Schiphol also near capacity at weekends, rail remains the preferred carbon-friendly alternative for short-haul executives; today’s disruption forces many onto last-minute KLM shuttle flights or remote-meeting fallbacks. Eurostar says normal stopping patterns will not resume until infrastructure manager ProRail completes emergency repairs and safety inspections—provisionally overnight on 6/7 July. Passengers connecting in London to onwards HS1 domestic or continental services should build in an extra two-hour buffer. Travel-management companies are advising clients to: 1) re-ticket via Brussels if possible, 2) switch to Eurostar-Thalys combinations connecting at Brussels-Midi, or 3) use London-Paris trains plus Air France shuttles from CDG to Rotterdam-The Hague Airport for time-critical meetings.
