Austria-led anti-trafficking operation nets 1,024 arrests worldwide
The Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office (BK) announced on 6 July 2026 that Operation “Global Chain” – a month-long crackdown on human trafficking – has resulted in 1,024 arrests across 59 countries and the identification of more than 2,000 potential victims. Austria and Romania co-led the action under the EU’s EMPACT Joint Action Days framework, working closely with Interpol and local police forces on five continents. Seventeen victims were rescued on Austrian soil, while eight suspected traffickers were detained and two more are the subject of European Arrest Warrants. Globally, the majority of victims came from Latin American states such as Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela, as well as Moldova and Nepal. Investigators targeted sexual exploitation rings, forced begging networks and gangs using children to commit petty crime. For Austria’s border agencies the results underscore the shift towards intelligence-driven policing: officers used airline passenger-name records, Schengen Information System alerts and financial-crime data to pinpoint suspects transiting Vienna International Airport and the Brenner corridor. The BK said it would expand those analytics capabilities ahead of the ski season, when labour exploitation typically climbs in tourism hotspots. Corporate relocation managers should note that traffickers increasingly abuse legitimate visa channels by posing as recruitment agencies.

At this juncture, organisations may find it useful to work with a specialist such as VisaHQ; its digital portal offers up-to-date visa requirements, document validation tools and access to accredited advisers, helping employers avoid fraudulent recruiters while steering legitimate applicants through Austria’s complex permit procedures.

The BK advises employers to verify Austrian Trade Register excerpts and check whether intermediaries hold the mandatory placement permit when sourcing third-country nationals. Victims identified during the operation will be fast-tracked for residence permits under Austria’s humanitarian-stay provisions, allowing them to work while cooperating with prosecutors. The operation also has strategic implications: Brussels plans to fold EMPACT’s anti-trafficking portfolio into the new EU Migration Pact monitoring mechanism, meaning Austria will likely take on a coordinating role for the next four-year cycle (2027–2030).
