Shanghai kicked off its 2026 “Shanghai Summer” International Consumption Season at the West Bund Convention & Exhibition Center on 3 July, but organisers on 14 July highlighted a new cooperation with global card network Visa aimed squarely at inbound tourists. The upgraded “Visa Payment-Friendly Demonstration Zone” covers 3,000 merchants in popular districts such as the Bund, Xintiandi and Disney Resort. Enhancements include dual-currency QR codes that automatically route transactions to foreign card rails, self-service kiosks that issue China UnionPay + Visa virtual cards in minutes, and multilingual POS terminals that accept contactless wallets without requiring local phone numbers. For expatriates and frequent business travellers this removes a persistent pain-point: China’s domestic mobile-payment duopoly. Until now, topping up Alipay or WeChat Pay required a Chinese bank card, prompting many guests to carry large amounts of cash. The pilot allows holders of international Visa, Mastercard and JCB cards to pay in RMB with transparent FX rates at checkout. The consumption campaign, endorsed by the Ministry of Commerce, bundles the payment upgrade with time-limited tax-refund coupons, late-night metro extensions and hotel-event packages. City officials expect inbound spending during July–August to exceed CNY 15 billion, 20 percent more than in 2025, aided by the newly extended visa-free policy for 17 countries. Corporates running relocation or training programmes in Shanghai should brief arriving staff on the new payment options and consider pre-activating virtual cards to streamline per-diem reimbursements.
