Dubai unveils five-year multiple-entry tourist visa with no sponsor requirement
In a major step that could reshape inbound mobility flows to the UAE, Dubai authorities on 15 July 2026 formally launched a new five-year multiple-entry tourist visa that can be obtained without the need for a local sponsor. According to the announcement, any nationality may apply provided the traveller holds a passport valid for at least six months, proof of health insurance and a recent bank statement showing a minimum balance of AED 14,700 (about US $4,000). Approved applicants may stay up to 90 days per visit and up to 180 days in total during each 12-month period, giving frequent business visitors and family members unprecedented flexibility. Background: the UAE first piloted a five-year tourist visa in 2021, but the programme required applicants to route submissions through sponsor entities or invite letters. Removing the sponsor requirement signals the government’s confidence in its biometric vetting systems and aligns with the wider ‘We the UAE 2031’ economic vision that targets 40 million hotel guests annually by the end of the decade. Officials confirmed that applications will be accepted through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) smart portal and Dubai’s Amer centres, with processing times advertised at 5-7 working days. Practical implications: Corporate mobility teams can now maintain visiting experts, auditors and project managers on a rolling entry basis rather than repeated short-stay visas, reducing administrative overhead and improving cost visibility. Frequent flyers who split time between Gulf markets may leverage the visa for weekend stopovers or short-notice client meetings without triggering new applications. Importantly, days spent in the Emirates on the new visa do not count toward any future residence quota, keeping long-term relocation options open. Advisory: Employers should update travel policies so that staff understand the 180-day annual cap and the financial-statement requirement, which must be issued by a bank no more than 30 days before filing. Travellers should also ensure they exit before exceeding the cap, as overstays incur fines of AED 50 per day plus possible re-entry bans. HR teams are encouraged to build an internal tracker, as the flexible nature of the permit may obscure cumulative stays across multiple trips. Looking ahead, industry analysts predict the visa will intensify competition among Gulf hubs for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) traffic, especially once regional rail links come online. If uptake is strong, the UAE may consider extending similar unsponsored frameworks to other visa classes, such as the popular job-explorer visit permit.
