UK Foreign Office updates China travel advice, adds drone rules and typhoon guidance
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) refreshed its travel advice for mainland China on 15 July, incorporating new information on operating drones and reiterating precautions for the ongoing typhoon season. While entry requirements remain unchanged—British nationals can enter visa-free for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026—the guidance now highlights strict local permitting for recreational and commercial drone use. Travellers are warned that unauthorised aerial photography near sensitive sites can lead to detention. The notice also urges business travellers to monitor the China Meteorological Administration as Super Typhoon Bavi’s remnants continue to disrupt flights and coastal rail services. Corporates with July and August travel should build weather-related contingency time into itineraries and verify that health insurance covers storm-related delays. For global mobility teams the key takeaway is compliance: UK assignees who intend to film facility inspections, construction progress or marketing footage using UAVs must secure licences from provincial aviation regulators and, in some cases, public-security bureaus. Failure to do so can invalidate insurance and jeopardise work permits. The update underscores that the FCDO still views travel to China as broadly safe for business, but it reinforces the importance of registering with the embassy’s ‘Travel Aware’ alerts and carrying printed copies of visas, entry stamps and hotel registrations—documents frequently requested during random police checks in pilot free-trade zones. Companies should distribute the amended advisory to UK employees and contractors travelling on short-term arrangements, ensuring projects that rely on aerial surveying factor in an additional two to four weeks for permitting.
