Storm alerts force 20 % flight cut at Paris-Orly; delays expected at CDG
France’s civil-aviation regulator DGAC instructed airlines to slash Thursday-evening operations at Paris-Orly Airport by 20 % as powerful thunderstorms sweep across central France. The notice, issued at 17:53 local time on 16 July, warns carriers of potential ground-handling shutdowns and mandates redistribution of affected passengers under EU261 rules. Although Charles-de-Gaulle is not subject to mandatory cancellations, DGAC expects knock-on delays because aircraft and crew rotations start at Orly. Air France, Transavia and easyJet pre-emptively offered free rebooking for domestic shuttles and popular leisure routes such as Orly–Toulouse and Orly–Santorini. The order coincides with the first big outbound rush of the French summer holiday season; travel-management company Carlson Wagonlit projects that corporate itineraries account for 18 % of Thursday evening’s Orly departures, mainly to Madrid, Milan and North-African hubs. Employers are advised to monitor crew-duty limits and schengen visa validity if travellers are re-routed via overnight connections. Météo-France placed eight departments, including Val-de-Marne where Orly is located, on orange alert for violent gusts and hailstones. Thunderstorm-related flight reductions have become more frequent since DGAC adopted its proactive “CapOrage” safety protocol in April 2025, which automatically triggers slot-cuts when lightning density exceeds 19 flashes per minute within a 30-km radius. Passengers booked for 16–17 July should receive airline notifications by SMS. Ground transport alternatives are limited: SNCF maintenance is already reducing capacity on the OrlyBus and RER B replacement coaches. Companies with time-critical shipments transiting Orly’s cargo zone may face handling backlogs until Friday noon.
