International students heading to France this autumn will have to prove higher financial means. An update posted on the official France-Visas portal on 21 July confirms that, for visa applications lodged on or after 1 August 2026, applicants for long-stay ‘student’ visas must demonstrate resources of at least €877.50 per month – up from the previous benchmark of €615. The near-43 % increase brings the requirement into line with the re-indexed French minimum wage and rising living-cost data from national statistics office INSEE. The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs says the change reflects “realistic subsistence needs” for metropolitan France and the overseas departments and aims to reduce dropout rates linked to financial hardship. For universities and grandes écoles that recruit heavily overseas, the higher threshold may dampen demand from cost-sensitive markets in Africa and South-East Asia. Admissions offices will need to update offer letters, while corporate sponsors and scholarship bodies must raise stipend levels or provide formal guarantees. French banks that issue “blocked account” letters report a surge in last-minute top-up requests as students rush to meet the new figure before embassy appointments. Employers running international-graduate programmes should also take note. Trainees arriving on a student-visa track (before switching to ‘Recherche d’emploi/Création d’entreprise’ or Passeport Talent status) will need higher proof-of-funds, potentially shifting cost allocations from HR to mobility budgets. Failure to meet the new threshold will trigger visa refusal, with knock-on effects on project timelines. Practically, mobility managers should circulate the updated amount, ensure that payslips, bank certificates or sponsor letters explicitly state monthly availability of at least €877.50, and anticipate longer appointment lead-times as consulates adapt their checklists. Students already holding a valid visa or residence permit are not affected, but those who must apply for a first visa or renew a pending decision after 31 July should budget accordingly.
